Muscles of the Abdomen

Muscles of the anterior abdominal wall include 3 layers
(external and internal obliques and the transversus
abdominis) and a vertically oriented group called the rectus abdominis, which are enclosed in a connective tissue sheath. These muscles are important in respiration, increasing intra-abdominal pressure (for defecation, urination, or childbirth), and flexing and bending the trunk.
